Eddy D. Hawkins, HU

Hawkins pictureEddy is a working journalist, former media manager and broadcast technology consultant, with extensive experience in television, radio, print and online services. US-born, he has spent most of his adult life in Europe, but has worked throughout Europe, in North America, the Middle East, North Africa and South-East Asia. He has been a correspondent for the Times of London, the Financial Times, and a contributor to a large number of broadcasting organizations, including the BBC, CNN, CBC and numerous other broadcasters in the US and Europe. Today, he is an active, independent journalist who is also a regular contributor and TV news anchor for the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle.

In the educational sphere, Eddy has taught and lectured on journalism and broadcasting technologies in Europe, the US, Canada and China. He was a member of the team that launched the Course in Foreign Reporting at the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki, and has been a full-time instructor on every course since its inception. His focus is on imparting the conceptional framework and the practical skills needed to work as a foreign reporter on assignment.

As an immigrant himself, Eddy has first-hand experience of the issues and processes of integration, inclusion, and multi-culturalism, personally and professionally. To a large extent, foreign reporting is about interpreting events, developments and concepts from one cultural and social context into another. Much of his professional life and work has and does revolve around these themes.
